Five Top Stress Relief Tips For The Moment

Are you stressed out and need stress relief ASAP? Can’t wait for a yoga class or a massage for relief? Try these simple stress relief tips to get instantaneous results.

Take a break from whatever it is that is pushing you over the edge. If you’re in a busy meeting, excuse yourself, saying you need to use the restroom. Are your children fighting like crazy? Separate them, pretend you have to make a phone call, and lock yourself in the bedroom for a moment. Spouse pushing your buttons? Request a few moments alone to think clearly. Is the stressor a long term and overarching issue? Take some time off. Just by walking away, you will feel your stress level drop. Make good use of that break.

Breathe deeply. Deep breathing automatically lowers your heart rate and blood pressure, both of which are linked to your body’s stress response. Pay attention to your breath as you inhale, hold it, and then slowly exhale. When you’ve regained emotional control, you can go back into the stressful situation.

Think about the big picture. How important is this stressor, in the big picture of life? Is your livelihood at stake? Your friendship or marriage? Your health? Think of the other parts of your life that are positive. Can the problem at hand be fixed easily? Identify your part of the problem.

Make a plan. Once you’ve gained perspective, think through what you can do about the situation. Surrender whatever is not your responsibility, decide to do what you can do to help out, and let go of expectations for anything else.

Help others calm down too. If when you return to the situation, emotions are still running high, you may need to help the other people involved relieve their stress. Find ways to solve the problem together without placing blame.

It’s important to manage stress for optimal health. If your life is high-stress, you may want to build stress relief techniques into your daily routine.
